When showcasing classic movies from the public domain it’s impossible not to start with this 1922 silent classic. Nosferatu is one of the very first celluloid adaptions of Bram Stokers classic vampire novel Dracula. Not only is it the oldest surviving film of Dracula, it, like it’s main character (whose name was changed to ‘Count Orlok’ in a failed attempt to avoid copyright infringement), actually managed to rise from the dead! Upon learning of the films existence Florance Stoker, the widow of Bram Stoker, insisted every copy be destroyed as it was made without consent of the Stoker estate. It was believed that every copy had been destroyed until one resurfaced decades later.
